James 1:19-25

Sermon Response

LISTENING AND DOING

Read James 1:19-25

James is a very practical book. Every truth is his short letter comes with application. Our passage today is not different, it has one truth, believers need to not just hear the word of God but they need to do what it says. This truth is then given application. There are four things that a person needs to do prior to hearing the word. 1) Prepare themselves to listen. 2) Stop talking 3) Deal with their anger. 4) Get rid of all moral filth. Only after doing these four things is one ready to hear the word and do what it says. When we faithfully and obediently do what the word says then we will be blessed.

Discuss:

  1. What does it mean to “be quick to listen”?

  2. What does it mean to “be slow to speak”?

  3. What does it mean to “be slow to anger”?

  4. What does it mean to get rid of all moral filth?

  5. What is the blessing in verse 25?

Respond:

  1. How do you best “hear” the word of God?

  2. Which one of the four requirements for hearing the word are you worst at (quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger, moral filth? Why?

  3. Are you currently doing what the word says? Explain.

  4. What do you need to do this week to foster a greater hunger for the Word of God?

Prayer

God give us a heart that burns for your word. Do not let us be deceived but make us people who do what your word says. Speak to us Lord for your servants are listening.

Have a moment of silence where all are encouraged to ask God to give them a word.
